Standard II: Instructional Leadership

School executives set high standards for the professional practice of 21st century instruction and assessment that result in a no nonsense accountable environment. the school executive must be knowledgeable of best instructional and school practices and must use this knowledge to cause the creation of collaborative structures within the school for the design of highly engaging schoolwork for students, the on-going peer review of this work, and the sharing of this work throughout the professional community.

Standard 2a: Focus on Learning and Teaching, Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

Proficient: Works with others to systematically focus on the alignment of learning, teaching, curriculum, instruction, and assessment to maximize student learning; helps organize targeted opportunities for teachers to learn how to teach their subjects well with engaging lessons; utilizes multiple sources of data, including the Teacher Working Conditions Survey, for the improvement of instruction.

Activities:

  • Conducted walkthroughs targeted to the Common Core Standards, and worked with administration to analyze trends in teaching and learning based on those walkthroughs
  • Conducted numerous informal observations, and left targeted notes giving feedback on areas of strength/growth after each classroom visit
  • Conducted 15+ formal evaluation cycles (pre-conference, observation, and post-conference) using the NC Teacher Evaluation Rubric, and used that data to help inform our administrative team about instructional trends in our building
  • Worked to help organize and implement district benchmark testing (CASE21) each nine weeks, as well as assisting teachers with disaggregating and analyzing data from each benchmark
  • Designed and discussed with each grade-level PLC a "mini-PD" around writing clear daily learning targets, after recognizing during walkthroughs with administrative team that this was an area of growth for many teachers
  • Created and showed video showcasing "Look-Fors" in Standard II on the NC Teacher Evaluation Instrument

Standard 2b: Focus on Instructional Time

Proficient: Adheres to legal requirements for planning and instructional time; reviews scheduling processes and protocols that maximize staff input and address diverse student learning needs

Activities:

  • Participated as Belmont's administrative representative on the district's Calendar Committee for 2013-2014; assisted in building the district calendar for the 2013-14 school year, discussed legal and testing requirements, etc.
  • Assisted with student scheduling & placement in the spring by discussing with the administrative team the results of the teacher-completed student scheduling profiles
